Search underway for possible drowning victim at Newton Dam

CACHE COUNTY — Search and rescue crews are looking for a swimmer who may have drowned Saturday at Newton Dam. 

A 35-year-old male was swimming with a group at Newton Dam on Saturday, June 16, when several other people in the group noticed he was no longer with them, according to a news release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office

Searchers combed the area until 2 a.m. Sunday when the search was called off. The search resumed Sunday morning but was called off around 6 p.m., the sheriff’s office said. 

The search will resume Monday morning with Wasatch County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue joining the effort. 

The swimmer’s name has not been released. 

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue and the Utah Department of Public Safety Dive team also responded to the scene. The teams have been using sonar and other equipment to aid in the search. 

Newton Dam is located approximately 12 miles northwest of Smithfield in Cache County.
